$4.9 million sounds substantial. Divided among 50,000 people it is $99 each. Divided among five million it is under a dollar.
The material we reviewed does not state the class size, which means the reported figure conveys the defendant’s payment and nothing about the remedy. That is the standard form for settlement coverage, and it consistently favours the impression that something meaningful was recovered.
