Around 5.1 million unique accounts were exposed at Panera Bread, with names, email addresses, phone numbers and addresses described among the data.
Contact data alone is the least alarming category we file. The context in which it was collected is what makes it worth a short entry.
A Loyalty Scheme Is A Behavioural Database
The commercial purpose of a food loyalty programme is to associate purchases with an identity over time. That is not incidental to the scheme; it is the scheme. The resulting record describes when a person eats, where, how often and what they choose.
Purchase histories of that kind support inferences the customer never contemplated — dietary and religious observance, location patterns during a working week, changes in routine. None of it is sensitive by field name; much of it is sensitive by implication.
The Exchange Is Understood In One Direction
Customers do broadly understand they are trading data for discounts. What is not typically understood is retention: the record continues after the person stops visiting, and the exposure surfaces years later in a notification about a company they no longer use.
Graded medium. The account figure is consistently reported; the field list and access route are not fully established.
Compiled from public reporting, listed below. We are not asserting that purchase histories were among the exposed fields; the discussion of loyalty data is general to the model and labelled as such. Corrections: corrections@forensicpost.com.
